English Display: Active Reading Strategies (Non Fiction Texts)

Not rated yet

This display pack is a great addition to Literacy displays from 3rd class upwards. It includes six active reading strategies that can be implemented when reading any non - fiction text. The strategies could also be carried across subject areas and used in SESE/ SPHE as well as English. Posters have clear legible black text on colourful but minimalist background.

Each poster briefly describes an active reading strategy alongside a code. As pupils read a text they can be asked to include some of the codes e.g. identify the topic sentence/ something they have a question about/ a new piece of information.

These codes can be used to start a discussion of any non-fiction text, and I usually include them when reading history/ geography/ science texts as a way of making the reading more active, engaging and purposeful e.g. I might ask pupils to use at least 2 codes per paragraph.
