30 Weeks of Differentiated Spelling and Word Work Lists
This pack includes 30 week’s worth of spelling and word word lists. These lists are aligned with the Sounds Like Phonics C programme.
Each week has 3 differentiated lists which get increasingly more difficult. Each folder contains a pdf, keynote and powerpoint file so you can make your own edits and revisions to suit the needs of your class.
I have used this lists in my own class for the last two years. This resource is aimed at First Class but could be used in multigrade classes/senior infants or second class depending on your own pupil's levels. I don’t do a traditional Friday test, but I do use these lists for word exploration and as a spelling prompt.
Usually I introduce our new sound for the week on a Monday. As a whole class we compile lists of words we can make with that sound on our whiteboards, play some of the online Sounds Like Phonics Games, oral rhyming games and so on. Then my class split into our “word work groups”. These are differentiated to three levels which cater to the mixed abilities in the class. The differentiated lists are great- there is repetition and rhyme for those who need it, scope for mini lessons on morphology, prefixes and suffixes, and gradually more sophisticated language to extend the children’s vocabulary.
Each group is given one of these lists to read and explore- we usually highlight the sound, discuss meanings with our group, try put these words into sentences and illustrate the meaning. We use some of the words their way, and other, strategies and activities to help the children learn the sounds.
The children are encouraged to try use these words in their writing during the week. They take their lists home to read and I assign differentriated online spelling games which they love to play. This, along with some reading, is the only homework my class get. Some weeks we do some dictation with these words, other weeks we don’t. There isn’t a huge amount of pressure or dread associated with the lists as they aren’t treated like traditional spellings. I’m heading into my third year using this system and I’m happy that it’s effective and easy to organise in the classroom! :)
