Examine and Experiment - Open Ended Questions - Maths Talk Time
The aim of this resource is to encourage students to find mathematical links in the world around them and open up mathematical discussions in the class while also use the maths language that they know, extend on their current maths vocabulary.
Display on a whiteboard or print out and laminate. This resource includes 25 tasks that can be used as a warm up for a maths lesson, during maths stations or integrated into a general lesson. Ask the students to examine the problem posed and experiment to find a solution.
Most pages has been designed to have multiple answers at various levels so each page should be accessible to every child in your class, no matter their maths ability. It would be really beneficially to provide the students with lots of maths manipulatives and whiteboards to help them experiment.
This resource can be tailored to suit your class. You know your class best so play around with it and how it can be used. Students could be challenged to think of multiple ways of reaching the total or given a time limit to calculate their answer. Your students could work in groups to come up with their answers if group work is something you are working on.
Students should be encouraged to use their ‘Maths Vocabulary’ (as we call it in my class) when giving their answer and explaining their calculations.
