John Philip Holland was an Irish engineer who developed the first submarine to be formally commissioned by the US Navy, and the first Royal Navy submarine, Holland 1.

When studying this topic with your class, you can challenge them to become inventors and design a machine of their own. This could be used for a range of class levels, I did this with Senior Infants in a multigrade class. There were some brilliant ideas, with Junior Infants receiving a presentation from the Seniors on their ideas at the end of the lesson.
