Description
This 5- lesson drama unit fullfils the standards for Communication (OLC1 and OLC3 ROI) and addresses social justice issues: the need for social conventions and awareness of others. Suitable for Social Drama with SEN.
The unit explores ‘othering’ and scapegoating through the form of fantasy. In this way real life concerns are presented at a distance, reducing resistance. This is an approach that reaches the heart rather than the head, and could lead to more permanent change. It explores rumour: How do you know what to believe? It explores fairness: how do you right a historical wrong?
The scapegoated group are the Elgons, who do not resemble any earthly subgroup of humans so that resistance is minimised. The reflections are a springboard for rich discussions.
There are 5 drama lessons here, with one suggestion for historical research. A teacher might also find inspiration for thoghtful written activities in the Reflections
The ending is open, for the teacher and class to create a fair outcome for all together.
