'The Dentist' -A Rhyming Multisensory Story (SEN 3-19)
This is a fully resourced, step-by-step rhyming multisensory story ‘The Dentist’ aimed at helping individuals with sensory difficulties overcome barriers to their dental hygiene, building their confidence through exploring new and unfamiliar dental related sensory experiences.
Multisensory stories are aimed at connecting individuals with special educational needs and disabilities to literature, culture and topic in a way that is fun and engaging and meaningful to their lives.
A multisensory story is told using sensory stimuli (props). The story props are low budget items found around the home, garden, outdoor areas and in the classroom.
What are the Benefits of Multisensory Storytelling?
1. Stories create a bond between the storyteller and the story explorer enhancing and enriching experiences.
2. Connect the individual to literature and form a base on which to scaffold learning to work on personal goals and targets.
3. Provide the opportunity for the story explorer to explore and express their likes, dislikes and sensory preferences. These can be used to identify motivators, items to calm and individual when anxious, tired or stressed, identify triggers, some you may wish to avoid, other desensitise in a safe and therapeutic environment and to use sensory preferences in care plans to enhance daily life.
This story includes themed, sensory extension activities that link to area of the curriculum making them the perfect resource for SEN, ASD, Complex Needs, SPD, PMLD, EYFS, Junior Infants, Senior Infants, Mainstream Primary, Speech & Language and EAL students.
