This resource is a fun, active and multisensory activity that can be used to teach/revise all phonics sounds.
The children pick a picture card with the target sound to be taught/ revised.
They make balls of playdoh for each of the spaces in the "Count the Phonemes" section.
The children then say the word and press one ball of playdough down for each phoneme they hear.
After the children have identified how many phonemes are in the word, they then build the word using various materials- magnetic letters, letter tiles, scrabble letters etc.
There are letter tiles included in this resource (single letters/ vowels/ digraphs) that fit perfectly into the mats for 4/5 phoneme words.
If you are using the 6/7 phoneme mats, I recommend printing the letter tiles in portrait mode to ensure the letters fit into the smaller boxes.
Finally the children write the word at the end.
This resource includes
- Mats for 4/5/6/7 phoneme words
- Letter tiles - consonants, vowels, digraphs etc.
- Picture and word cards for the following digraphs - th, ch, sh, wh, ng, ph
I use this resource as morning activities, during station teaching time and to help reinforce sounds already covered. This resource would also be suitable for teachers working with smaller groups or individual children in a support setting.
For best results, print out the mats and put into drywipe reusable wipe clean pockets
