Mathematics: We will be focussing on the basic 2D shapes initially – square, rectangle triangle and circle. They will be given teacher made resources in order to investigate the properties of each shape. After they are familiar with the shapes, they will be asked to try to locate shapes in the classroom environment – circular tables, rectangular doorframe, square books etc. When I am convinced that the children know the classification of the shapes, I will ask the children to draw them, find the shapes in pictures/ colour shape patterns. The children will also sing the Shapes song –actions will be included and while the teacher provides the music with his guitar.

History: Story, stories. Firstly the teacher will brainstorm ‘space’. The teacher will record on a KWL chart what the children know and want to know about space. The children will listen to the story of Neil Armstrong. The teacher will discuss the main events in Neil’s life and why he is remembered. The children will watch a video based on the moon landing. We will discuss as a class how Neil Armstrong got there. Children will respond to the story by completing a story sequence worksheet.

Geography: Natural Environment. Planet Earth in space. Further exploration of the moon and planet Earth from space. YouTube clips and freewriting exercises to describe a trip to the moon.

PE: Sending, receiving and travelling. Creating and playing games. Warm-up, rocket ship taking off – working in pairs, exploration of movement on different levels and making shapes with your body . Driving the rocket – mirroring activities. Walking on the moon – slow-moving actions. Each child has a beanbag and works individually.

SPHE: Myself. Self-Identity. Making decisions. Circle Time (while in their pods) – learning about others interests, importance of making decisions. Story – The boy who cried wolf. Emphasis on not telling tales and making the correct decisions.

Visual Arts: Making construction, construction, and colour. Construct a rocket made from cutting out 2D shapes they have learned in maths this week.

Drama: Role play: re-enact the moon landing in the socio dramatic space station and rocket.

Music: Performing, song singing. Warm up- sing song two little feet go tap tap tap – exploring sound. Creating sounds using our bodies to create sounds to accompany the song “Star Light”. Recognising and performing the regular beat from pictorial symbols.

Religion/Ethical Education: Jesus calms the storm; explore the story and reflect on who they can turn to when afraid. The children will engage in discussion, think pair share and complete a worksheet where the children have to write the words that Jesus said to the storm and colour the picture. Faith formation goal: Become aware that God is with them, however they feel. The children will recap on a prayer that they were learning last week. “Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord. May they rest in peace”
