Guided Reading/Literature Circles Pack
Literature circles are like book clubs - your students get together in a group to discuss and work on a piece of reading.
Each child has a role and will engage with the text in a different way.
This promotes an appreciation and positive attitude towards reading, while also developing group work skills.
Once the structure and routines are established, this works so well and students love it! While it takes a little organisation to get started, once that is done all you need to do prep-wise is make sure groups have enough worksheets for their roles! I would recommend giving each group an envelope folder with role cards, book marks and sheets inside. They can keep completed work in here too, and you can easily access this for assessment.
(This is a great system for placement too!)
This pack includes everything you need to get literature circles started in your class:
- Role cards with explanations:
- Discussion director
- Summariser
- Artful Artist
- Vocabulary finder
- Passage Picker
- Connector
- Bookmarks corresponding to each role card: students can keep this on hand while they read to help maintain focus on their task
- Graphic organisers/worksheets for each role: students use these to engage with their role and can then share their findings with their group, as led by the discussion director.
These worksheets can also be used in standalone reading lessons outside of the literature circles structure - Group work assessment sheet
See below for info on the lesson structure. I hope this resource brings joy and fun to your readers :)

Workshop structure; this is the format I follow but of course you can do what works for you and your class!
- Mini-lesson (5-7 mins): focused on the strategies dealt with in a particular role. For example I might show students a passage and model writing a summary. Students can then practice this in pairs.
- Reading (25-30 mins): Once in groups, students take their role card, bookmark and graphic organiser. I rotate roles in a particular order which I display on the wall, so students know that today, they are the connector, tomorrow they will be the summariser etc.
Students read a chapter or a certain number of pages independently. I like to leave post-its on the table for students to take notes as they read, if they feel the need to.
Once students finish reading, they take their graphic organiser and fill it in.
During this time, teacher will choose 4-5 students to conference with, and provide support to students who may need it. - Share (5-10 mins): The discussion director will ask questions they have generated. They will then invite each group member to share their work. Optionally, and if time allows, you can invite 2 or 3 students to share their work with the whole class.
