September 20

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00am on day 20 of September, repeating indefinitely

On September 20th, 1946, the first Cannes Film Festival was held. It was supposed to happen for a number of years but the Second World War prevented it. Film is such an important part of our lives and despite the invention of television, going to see a film in the cinema is one of the most popular activities that we do in Ireland. Ireland has strong connections to film with lots of very famous films being made here. There are also lots of famous Irish directors and actors. Irish films are also becoming very famous with many of them being shown across the world. The Fís Awards give children in primary schools the opportunity to make their own films and there is a big award ceremony to celebrate their achievements every year.
