Kathleen Lynn: Irishwoman, Doctor and Activist
Covering Irish history, this recount is ready for International Women's Day. Kathleen Lynn was an Irish humanitarian who participated in almost every event of the Decade of Commemorations: she supported the striking workers during the Great Lockout; she participated in the Easter Rising; she was released from jail as the authorities needed her medical skills to fight the Spanish flu. Her greatest claim to fame was founding St Ultan's hospital to treat the children from the Dublin slums. The Charlemont hotel in Ranelagh stands where Ultan's used tobe.

Thanks for the speedy reply. :-)
I thought maybe as Madeleine had co-founded St Ultan's, it might have snuck in that way. I think it's the Rosamund Jacobs diaries that mention the two women sharing a bedroom, as well as you've already mentioned, their living together for over fifty years. I suppose that's the challenge with history, the evidence is always open to the interpretation of the historian. Great to have some teaching materials about this fantastic Irish woman!Mar 4, 2022, 14:31I would just like to add two things: firstly Kathleen had an entire committee helping her, and secondly. Madeline's name was omitted from lack of space. I had to check the text again to see if her name was there as I wrote this over a year ago.
As I said yesterday, there is a limit as to what can be included in a one-page piece of text. -

Does this resources mention Kathleen's life partner Madeleine ffrench-Mullen?
Thanks. :-)Mar 3, 2022, 11:59Thanks for your question Cecilia. I had to check the text to answer as it is over a year since I wrote it.
No, Madeline is not mentioned, because of limitations of space. I needed to emphasise the contrast between her background and her activities, and its personal cost on her. I needed to emphasise the ill-health of the slums, and the professional prescience of the management. I also needed to emphasise the cleverness of their fundraising efforts - giving prominence to de Valera's name in order to increase attendance.
The text is 412 words and is one A4 page long.
I presume you are aware there is no evidence they were life partners. We assume they were, because they shared a house and spent a great deal of time together, but her diaries include no details to confirm the assumption.
