This is an activity that my Junior Infants love to do. In their spare time, when their work is finished, They take a white board and a word mat and practice writing the words, making their own sentences, and drawing lovely pictures. We also use these during literacy lift off at the independent station.
** During structured writing times, I like to write a sentence on the board such as "Look at the _____"; "I like the ___"; " I can see the ____" ; and the children can copy my sentence, using their word mat to pick a word and fill in the blank space.
This is also a nice activity for oral language use. Children can look at the pictures and sound out the words. They can then put the words into sentences orally.
